Around eleven o’clock the women started Gent-Wevelgem yesterday. The race began in Boezinge and the peloton had to cover four laps of almost twelve kilometres before the riders headed into the hill section.

A compact peloton arrived at the bottom of the Kemmelberg after seventy kilometres of racing. The Kemmelberg and Monteberg caused a first selection. Elise Delzenne, Annelies Dom and Lotte Kopecky were part of the first group. On the narrow roads after Monteberg Elise Delzenne crashed. A move from the rider in front of her made here crash into a ditch. Luckily, she didn’t have too much damage, only some abrasions. But the race was over and out.

Afterwards, Annelies Dom was dropped from the front group. Only Lotte Kopecky was left in the first group of about forty riders that reached the top of the Monteberg, after the second ascent. From then on forty kilometres were left till the finish. There were many attacks in the finale, but nobody managed to stay ahead. It was a sprint in the streets of Wevelgem. Lotta Lepistö, winner of Dwars door Vlaanderen, beat Jolien D’hoore. Coryn Rivera completed the podium. Lotte Kopecky got sixteenth. Annelies Dom and Kaat Van der Meulen arrived at the finish seven minutes later in the second big group. Jessie Daams and Trine Schmidt had also abandoned the race.

Lotte Kopecky: “I can be satisfied with my condition, but not with the result. In the finale I was riding in the wind a lot and I chose the wrong wheel for the sprint. At a certain moment I was on the wheel of Jolien, but there were so many attacks in the finale that I couldn’t hang on to that position. With two kilometres to go Audrey Cordon jumped away. I was riding behind her at that moment and joined her, but Cervélo – Bigla was chasing for Lotta Lepistö so I thought it was too risky too continue.”

“All things considered, I am positive about this race. I have done the kilometres to be ready for the Ronde and I felt good. That makes me confident for Sunday and for the World Championships Track later this month.”

Wednesday, the Lotto Soudal Ladies ride Pajot Hills Classic. It will be the first race of Anna Kiesenhofer for the team. The other riders in the line-up are Jessie Daams, Elise Delzenne, Annelies Dom, Trine Schmidt and Fenna Vanhoutte.
